Mason Jar Savings Challenge: The Easy Way to Save Money!

Do you have a hard time saving money?

Perhaps you have a big financial goal you want to work towards (i.e. a new tech gadget, vacation, or a downpayment on a car) or just want to have an emergency fund on hand.

Somehow the money just gets spent every month and you don’t even know what you spent it on.

What if I told you that you could save $1300/year without much effort and most likely using spare money you have lying around the house?

Meet the Mason Jar Savings Challenge!

The first time I heard about the Mason Jar Money Challenge was on the Frugal Beautiful website.

She recommends this method because seeing the money stack up in a jar every week is very motivating. There’s a free printable on her website that you can stick on the outside of the jar.

I love this idea and wanted to take it a step further for all of us bullet journal and planner junkies!

Since I’m obsessed with tracking everything in my bullet journal, a mason jar savings bujo tracker was in order.

I created a free printable that you can add to your planner or bullet journal so you can track your weekly savings in your favorite spot. It’s available to download at the end of this post.

But first, I want to give you all of the details of the Mason jar saving challenge.

How do you save money in a jar?

The concept behind the challenge is that you save money every week in a large mason jar. Keep saving for a year until you have $1300. Let’s talk about how that money adds up.

How much should you save weekly?

The challenge starts out small, just $1 per week. The following week you save $2 and the week after that $3. Each week, you increase the amount by $1 more than the previous week. Since there are 52 weeks in a year, you’ll be saving $52 that last week.

Save money using this method and by the end of the year, you will have saved $1300.

Does the 52 week money challenge work?

This method of savings does work because, especially in the beginning, the amounts are small and easy to achieve.

Also, the fact that you are saving actual bills (or change), you can see your money growing each week as the jar gets filled.

There’s something more rewarding about it than moving money to another fund in your bank account.

One of the challenges with this savings plan is that, by then end, you are saving larger amounts of money. But since the increases are so gradual, it’s still a very achievable goal to reach.

If this goal seems to daunting, don’t let that stop you from saving!

Start out with $0.25 or $0.50 per week and increasing by that amount each week. You may not be saving as much money but you are still saving and that is the most important part of this challenge.

What is it that you are really wishing for?

Start saving today with the Mason Jar Money Challenge to make that goal a reality!
